Some paintings ask to be understood immediately. Ilona Popermajer’s paintings ask you to stay with them.
Opening now, the exhibition “Ilona Popermajer — Selected Works” brings together paintings and drawings spanning several decades. Moving between abstraction and figuration, the works reveal themselves slowly: a gesture appears, a figure takes shape, or an unexpected detail changes the mood of the image.
Vulnerability and loneliness meet irony, mischief, and playfulness in compositions that remain open to discovery. The longer you look, the more the image can shift.
The exhibition includes ten paintings based on Modest Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition,” created as part of the multidisciplinary project “Scenes in a Flow.”
The exhibition remains on view through the end of the year. For those unable to visit in person, it can also be explored through our Artsy Show and Viewing Rooms.
