Her work is characterized by a strong emphasis on aesthetics, creativity, and modernism. With her foundation in Fine Arts and her role as a professor, Anda’s art has been exhibited throughout North America and Europe, captivating audiences globally. For two decades, our gallery has featured a selection of Anda Kubis’s art, and we are preparing to present a larger exhibition of her latest creations in 2025.
Her artistic endeavors are imbued with a profound commitment to aesthetics and creativity, which she views as fundamental elements enhancing the quality of life. Reflecting serene landscapes or intricate microscopic views, Anda’s abstract creations serve to challenge conventional perceptions and provoke a myriad of interpretations. Through her bold and vibrant color choices, Anda captures the essence of a contemporary world illuminated by light yet shaped by the intangible influence of digital technologies and modern tools. Drawing inspiration from her father, Eduard Peter Kubis, a contemporary furniture designer of Latvian descent, Anda’s artistic vision is firmly anchored in the principles of modernism, emphasizing aesthetics informed by cutting-edge technologies, scientific progress, innovative material exploration, and the promotion of human well-being.
With a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and a Master of Fine Arts degree from York University in Toronto, Anda currently imparts her wealth of knowledge as a professor at OCAD University. In her role, she teaches students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, advocating for innovation, global perspectives, and creative entrepreneurship that prioritizes wellness and fosters positive societal change. Over the course of her illustrious 30+ year career in education, Anda has held various teaching and administrative positions at OCAD U, including Chair of the Drawing and Painting Program, Associate Dean of Outreach and Innovation in the Faculty of Art, Dean/Director of the Haliburton School of Art + Design in Peterborough and Haliburton, as well as Chair of Criticism & Curatorial Practice, Cross-Disciplinary Art Practices, and Art & Social Change.
Working from her studios in the picturesque Kawartha Lakes region and bustling Toronto, Canada, Anda Kubis continues to produce art that resonates deeply with viewers across the globe.
In her works from 2013 shown above, Kubis further explores digital painting by distinctly playing with the multiple layers that make up various large, complex digital paintings. Manipulating the sequences of layers allows for the inexhaustible production of unique cropped configurations of imagery. While the paintings on canvas employ a vast number of layers, in the works on paper, Kubis limits herself to a maximum of five layers. She takes random cuts from within the existing paintings, challenging herself to create engaging compositions from these cuts. In the puzzle-like nature of her process, Kubis embraces chance “operations” while also imposing decisive creative problem-solving. It is the fluidity of this digital process that provides Kubis a rich and generative artistic experience. This work continues her decades-long interest in improvisation as an important aspect of painterly abstraction, both historically and through her own emphasis on it within the contemporary technological environment.
